Day 2: On to Helena

Miles Today: 305
Miles Total: 595
Weather: Showers, upper 60s
Consecutive Days with a cow sighting: 2

Woke up when the sun came out, which was way too early in the morning.  Everyone else was still sleeping, so I got up and surfed the web a bit and started a new book on my Kindle.  After finishing a couple of chapters I went back to bed for a bit.

Today’s drive was long, and pretty uneventful.  We stopped in Coeur d’Alene for some gas.  Mountains, Full fuel, water, jeep w/full fuel all took a pretty heavy toll on the gas mileage – got 6.2 mpg for the first tank.

We stopped for lunch at a rest area just before Missoula…Taylor and Ryan had soup.

All of the trees are dying on McDonald pass dropping into Helena (actually there are a lot of dying trees in the area).  There is a beetle that is getting into the trees and killing them.  I suspect that there are going to be some pretty nasty fires in this area in the future.

We pulled into Heidi and Doug’s place around 4:30p.   Ordered pizza for dinner, and sat around and drank beer and ate pizza all night.  They had some trees cleared recently (due to the beetles mentioned above), and we had a big bonfire…unfortunately it was raining on and off, so we set up a little shelter.

Our plan is to hang out in town until Tuesday and then start heading east again.
